As the streaming wars rage on Watch The Silencing OnlineSpotify is attempting to raise the bar on its original material.

The first round of Spotify "Singles," which launched on Nov. 30, gave users access to new music by more than 20 artists including John Legend, Grouplove and Lindsey Stirling.

The deal is that an artist will record one of their original tracks anda cover song at Spotify's in-house recording studio in New York. Both will debut back-to-back, giving you a nice contrast and allowing you to see a new side of the artist.

Some highlights from the first release include John Legend paying tribute to Marvin Gaye, Grouplove covering the legendary Bob Dylan and Local Natives taking a run at Kanye West ... yep, you read that right.

Spotify is also working on another series called "Live," which will feature -- as you might have guessed -- live performances by artists.

Like "Singles," the series will be available as a playlist under your "Browse" section. A lucky few will be invited to the sessions, creating "another way for artists to connect with fans," the company said.

While we wait to see if this latest creative maneuver proves successful for Spotify, at least we'll have some fresh tunes to listen to.
