NVIDIA is Seventeen (2019)planning to establish a new R&D center in Shanghai in an effort to sustain its leadership in AI chips amid growing sales challenges in China. Sources say CEO Jensen Huang proposed the plan during a recent meeting with Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng. The company is leasing new office space to accommodate current staff and allow for future expansion. The new center will focus on tailoring solutions for Chinese clients while contributing to global R&D in areas such as chip design verification, product optimization, and autonomous driving technologies. The Shanghai government has reportedly expressed initial support for the project. NVIDIA currently employs about 2,000 people in the city, mainly in sales and support. [Financial Times]
